Prejudice's story told in movie

As a high school student, Perry Wallace routinely would walk out the door of his north Nashville home, glance at North High School and then board a bus headed across the city to another school that African-American students could attend.

Growing up in Nashville in the 1960s, Wallace thought he understood bigotry and social change. Yet, when he attended Vanderbilt as the Southeastern Conference's first African-American basketball player, he wasn't prepared for the biting racial slurs hurled at him in such settings as Starkville, Miss., and many other stops around the SEC.

Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4

This story exposes the value many children place on wearing the same cool clothing as or fitting in with the in-crowd; however, a message of generosity shines through when Jeremy gives his prized sneakers to a friend in need who has smaller feet. Illustrations done in pencil, ink, and watercolors effectively depict the grays and browns of the wintertime inner-city setting, the institutional greens and blues of the school, and the warm hues of this African-American home. The characters' faces, drawn with thin lines, wide-set eyes, and a variety of skin tones, are expressive. A poignant, thought-provoking book.—Kirsten Cutler, Sonoma County Library, CA

N.S. bylaw will ban smoking in cars with kids

Our town is very progressive in its pursuit of change and global responsibility. I believe many of you are naive to this fact. We were the first non smoking town in 2001 and were the first Fair Trade Town in Canada this past April. To this end it is inappropriate for many of you to comment on a situation, and a town, you have never lived in nor visited. The bars, pubs and restaurants complained to no end when we were the first to ban smoking in public places. They were afraid they'd lose business. So far I do not know of any business that has had to close it doors because of the non smoking bylaw. I acknowledge that change brings resistance. I also acknowledge that many parents feel they will be treated like children when this bylaw comes into effect. The fact is, when you have a habit, no matter what kind, you often fail to make the right decisions for those most important people in your life.

David Nitkin on state politics issues

Alma T. Bell, Baltimore: How will the relationship between rap mogul Russell Simmons and Michael [S.] Steele affect Steele's relationship with the religious right?

Nitkin: Steele, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, is a former Catholic seminarian who has strong moral convictions and is opposed to abortion rights. His relationship with Simmons, the founder of Def Jam records, is based on economic issues: both Steele and Simmons are vocal in their support of small black businesses. One of Steele's major campaign messages is supporting black families and businesses in creating "legacy wealth." Religious conservative voters -- a small minority in Maryland -- will almost certainly not support the Democratic Senate nominee. The question then becomes is there anything about Steele that keeps them on their hands during the election.

Sundancing: Jessica & Cash; Plus, Paris & Jared?

My day started yesterday at about 8 a.m.

There was no time for breakfast, but I was able to down a quick cup of coffee before heading to the Kari Feinstein Style Lounge to interview Emily Blunt about her new movie Sunshine Cleaning. (The movie, costarring Amy Adams and about two sisters who open a crime-scene cleaning company, is one of the most buzzed about flicks of the festival).

I’ll have more of my chat with Ms. Blunt later this week, but I must tell you that she revealed something quite, um, big about her singer boyfriend, Michael Bublé. When one of her posse handed her a box of size XL condoms from Proper Attire, she laughed, "These will be good for Michael."

I finally grabbed something to eat at the MySpace Café at the Lift, where Tom Arnold barreled in and quickly explained why he was so, well, wet.

Criticizing Vonage feels like kicking a dog. Yet, what else am I supposed to do looking at the Web-calling outfit's third-quarter results? The company's churn is up, customer acquisition costs are up, lifetime value per supbscriber is down. That's very troubling.
