Theatre investigation related to thefts

A burglary last June and thefts at the Palo Alto Children's Theatre are linked to the investigation of financial crimes that caused the City of Palo Alto to close the beloved institution late Thursday, according to Police Chief Lynne Johnson.

The theater reported a printer, cash, coins and checks stolen on June 18, 2007, but additional equipment was also discovered missing, Friends of the Children's Theatre board member Dan Conway said Friday.

"We've had some very expensive equipment that has been lost or stolen," board member Ken Freiberg said. "It was a big, huge surprise."

Conway, however, said he didn't think the equipment was that expensive.

Friends Treasurer Justine Franklin and board President Paula Collins said they knew of only the one burglary last summer.

School, Lindsay Roberts deny all

Oral Roberts University and its president's wife, Lindsay Roberts, issued written statements Saturday saying that claims and accusations added to a lawsuit Friday are untrue.

A report attached to the lawsuit Friday contains allegations that Roberts, 51, spent a great deal of time with an underage male.

"I live my life in a morally upright manner and throughout my marriage have never, ever engaged in any sexual behavior with any man outside of my marriage as the accusations imply," Roberts said in her statement.

Sunroad tower wins 'onion' in annual awards

That's because all but one of the recipients of the seven Onions boycotted the event, not wanting to take the embarrassment of being told their projects stink.

About 500 people attended the event, during which a special award was given to Qualcomm Stadium for housing fire evacuees in October. This is the 40th anniversary of the stadium.

Jim Watts, director of architecture and planning for the San Diego Unified School District, was the only Onion winner attending Friday night. The district received an Onion for the design of Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Scripps Ranch.

Watts accepted the award with tongue-in-cheek, saying that the school district has received so many onions that he is "starting to run out of wall space" in his office for them.

The district also received a second Onion for the school, this time voted on by 79 percent of the participants in an online "people's choice award" balloting conducted through The San Diego Union-Tribune's Web site.

Britney Spears' family anger

Britney Spears is furious with her family for trying to make her seek psychiatric help.

The 'Gimme More' singer's parents Jamie and Lynne - who believe their daughter's erratic behaviour is down to bipolar disorder - are not welcome in her life, says the singer's manager Sam Lutfi.

Lutfi said in a telephone conversation, with Britney at his side: "They just barged in. They have an agenda. Their agenda is jealousy because they don't fit in. I do. They see her three times a year."

Celia Cruz exhibit celebrates 'Queen of Salsa'

He said the word meant Cruz's onstage battle cry representing her vivid approach to life.

"It was the spirit of her life, the energy she personified," Muñoz said.

Cruz loved flamboyant clothes. While music videos, photographs, documents and timelines of the Cuban-born Grammy winner's expansive career abound, the exhibit's biggest attention-drawers are the vibrant, heavily ruffled mermaid-like dresses, called "bata Cubanas," and pairs of gravity-defying shoes Cruz wore on stage.

Perez, who worked with the National Museum of American History on the show, said it needed to have "things she used, things that were important to her."

Carol Wyrick, the Alameda's acting director, noted Cruz's influence on fashion, including some of today's sky-high shoe styles.

New York City deal giving private schools exclusive access to public ...

NEW YORK (AP) _ Dozens of sports fields on a tiny island off Manhattan have prompted a debate over fair play.

The legal battle over public parkland on Randall's Island pits some of the city's most exclusive private schools against mostly poor, minority communities.

Last year, the city forged a deal with a consortium of 20 private schools in Manhattan under which the schools agreed to pay about $52 million over 20 years to build new athletic fields and renovate 36 existing ones on the island.

Golf resort hooks novices

The first thing that sticks out about golfing at Disney isn't the landscape, the high-tech golf carts or even the sand trap that resembles Mickey Mouse.

It's the golfers.

The Magnolia and Palm courses, which have been the heart of Disney's golf experience since they began hosting an annual PGA Tour event in 1971, are open to the public 50 weeks a year.
