Hillary Rodham Clinton, a woman of many homes, says the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge, with its brick houses, smooth streets and scrubbed children, made her who she is. Whether it will make her president is a different matter and more a task of ranking what's left of the field come November than of anointing a favorite daughter on Super Tuesday. Excerpts from editorials in Florida newspapers
The first report from the statewide grand jury on gangs should be required reading in Tallahassee, especially the parts about money. Having met in West Palm Beach since August, the grand jurors issued their first report last week. Correctly, it deals with "arrests and prosecutions." Later reports will make recommendations on intervention, education and rehabilitation, but draining the gang swamp should be the first priority. The report reaches two main conclusions: Florida needs more prosecutors targeting gang-related crime, and counties need more gang-oriented investigative units. Notably, the report calls for "state-funded" prosecutors, on the reasonable assumption that gang-related crime is a statewide problem. Gangs don't observe city or county borders, so why should the state? Palm Beach County illustrates the money problem.
Seattle lawyer to undertake Wade's defense
That investigation is continuing, with no new developments to report, a police spokeswoman said Monday. Levy thinks the homicide, not the ATM card, is why he was offered the case. "This is speculation on my part," he said, "but I have homicide experience. Although the federal charges do not involve homicide, there are issues." Levy's last homicide case involved defending members of the Hells Angels motorcycle club on violent crime and racketeering charges, including murder and a near-fatal beating. The outcome: a hung jury, although some have since been convicted. In other high-profile cases, Levy helped get a new trial for a death-row inmate after arguing to the U.S. Supreme Court that the judge in the case, later convicted of taking bribes, was so corrupt that his mere presence in the trial made it unfair.

NY luxury tower at ground zero defies soft market
The project was announced as the pace of huge real estate deals has slowed, credit has tightened and Wall Street is still struggling in the swamp of subprime mortgages. Developer Larry Silverstein referred to "negative trends" in financial markets while announcing the project and answered his own rhetorical questions on whether the Financial District was vulnerable to downturns in the financial markets that have caused vacancies to spike in the past. "The answer, in a word, is 'no.' In two words, 'Hell no'," said the man who took out a 99-year lease on the World Trade Center six weeks before it was destroyed on September 11, 2001. Silverstein said his confidence reflected the commitment of elected officials to the World Trade Center's rebuilding, the decision of 184 non-financial companies to relocate downtown, and easy access to the area through public transportation.
Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence
Aren't you hurting the cause of your people, they ask. And when I hear them, though I often understand the source of their concern, I am nevertheless greatly saddened, for such questions mean that the inquirers have not really known me, my commitment or my calling. Indeed, their questions suggest that they do not know the world in which they live. In the light of such tragic misunderstanding, I deem it of signal importance to try to state clearly why I believe that the path from Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, the church in Montgomery, Alabama, where I began my pastorage, leads clearly to this sanctuary tonight. I come to this platform to make a passionate plea to my beloved nation. This speech is not addressed to Hanoi or to the National Liberation Front. It is not addressed to China or to Russia.
FCHS's magic finally came to an end
SMITHLAND, Ky. — Fort Campbell High School basketball coach Amy Gammons stood near the exit doors of the Livingston Central High School gym as the University Heights Academy Blazers cut down the nets on their 15th Region 2 All "A" championship.Gammons’ eyes were still red from tears and she seemed to barely notice the green and yellow-clad fans running around the gym. She waited patiently for her team to come out of the locker room and board the bus.Inside that locker room the Falcons set dejected with heads hung low after Saturday night’s 56-50 loss to the Blazers."It’s a sad thing," a teary-eyed Gammons said after the game. "I have some seniors who deserved to go to State."The even sadder thing for the Falcons is that they did nearly everything right, but still lost the game.
