High School Musical: bland, cheesy, queasy

To describe this show as cheesy would be an insult to any half-decent cheddar, stilton or brie. But this is American cheese, produced in Disney's own huge factory, where ingredients that might once have been organic are reduced to perfect blandness.

And it has to be said that there is a very big market for this product. The Churchill Theatre in Bromley, south of London, was full of children, especially girls, some as young as five or six, with the median age perhaps 11 or 12.

Police investigate death of Multnomah County jail inmate

Nguyen, who has a Web site advertising her private family and youth counseling business called Jasmine Healing and Counseling, also worked most recently for Options Counseling Services of Oregon Inc., a private nonprofit health care agency. The 15-year-old boy was not an Options client, the agency's executive director said.

According to court records, prosecutors were preparing a criminal case against Jasmine Nguyen and had met with the 15-year-old to inform him about testifying before a grand jury. "He expressed reluctance to participate by testifying against Hanh Nguyen because he loved her and wanted to spend his life with her," wrote prosecutor Greg Moawad in a court document.

The teenager was scheduled to testify on Dec. 7. By then, police say, he had run off with the older woman and the woman's husband and her teenage daughter.

Corzine approval rating dips down to 40 percent

Gov. Jon S. Corzine is receiving poor marks from New Jersey residents who don't particularly like the governor's policies or his style of governing, according to a new Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll.

Midway through his four-year term, 40 percent of the poll respondents said they approved of Corzine's job performance, while 44 percent disapproved, the highest negative rating found by the poll since Corzine took office in January 2006.

State residents gave Corzine an overall C-minus grade on issues ranging from cost-cutting, property taxes, government ethics, cost of living, schools and Corzine's level of effort.

Corzine's highest approval rating of 51 percent came in April 2007, shortly after he was critically injured in an auto accident.

On the most substantial Corzine policy initiative adopted to date -- a revamping of the way public schools receive state aid -- 45 percent of residents thought it was a bad idea, while 37 percent approved of the measure.
