| 'Financial crimes' probe shuts Children's Theatre
A police investigation into "financial crimes" at the historic Palo Alto Children's Theatre has closed the theatre indefinitely, possibly for weeks, police Chief Lynne Johnson announced late Thursday. (View the press release.) Johnson told the Weekly that an investigation has been quietly underway for several months, but that the scope of the irregularities has yet to be determined -- either as to the amount of funds or the individuals involved. "It's a very complex investigation and we're sorting it all out," she said. The investigation is a priority, she said. "Because the theatre is much beloved and longtime employees there are much beloved in the community we want to conclude the investigation as soon as possible," she said.
Now global warming is even affecting The Rooney Bin
The debate about the validity and cause of global warming continues, but rumors of global cooling were circulating during last week's big chill in Northeast Florida and blizzards in the northern half of the U.S. Al Gore's film, An Inconvenient Truth, has heated the controversy among climate experts about whether greenhouse gasses produced by humans are causing temperatures to rise or if it's just the Earth's natural cycle. A friend of mine said her hot flashes were so bad that she was afraid Gore would blame the warming trend on her. Last week's chill may be an indication a mini ice age has begun. Scientific opinions voiced at the 2006 National Hurricane Conference included that of storm prognosticator William Gray, who was quoted as saying that blaming humans for global warming is "so much foolishness." He also believes the Earth has experienced a natural pattern of warming and cooling, and that it likely will cool off again within the next 20 years.
Competitive intelligence 101
You can imagine how popular I was in the plant, especially when taking into account I had exactly 0 years, 0 days, 0 hours and 0 minutes of actual tire building experience. And I was 23. I used to joke (after ducking punches) with the operators that I should just wear a black t-shirt with a scull-and-cross-bones emblazoned on the front and be done with it. I learned a ton, but it was a dirty job. In business, there are some dirty jobs as well. Carrying out competitive intelligence is one of them. I get asked a lot 'how' to conduct competitive intelligence. i.e. how to extract information from organizations/firms/people that may or may not want to part with it. You can look this up online and find all kinds of vague moral and ethical guidelines, and links to nowhere.
Political experts weigh in on the Florida primary
I don't think he's the choice of the conservative wing of the party, but he clearly is a candidate who can attract the more moderate voter, which in a general election becomes an attractive attribute in attempting to pull over independent voters." What do you think we'll see next Tuesday? "My gut feel is that McCain is going to do very well, but I think Romney still has a following." Why should Mike Huckabee stay in the race? "Huckabee will try to get a delegate slate that he could use to influence the platform of the party. If the race stays close between McCain and Romney, he may even have enough delegates that he could become a power broker." You're a political-marketing expert. What do the campaigns have to do now from a marketing standpoint? "They have to manage the image that comes out of this campaign.
MICHAEL ROSENBERG: MSU/U-M: Nothing more than Green party
Kalin Lucas graduated from elementary school, middle school and high school. 2. Michigan hired Brian Ellerbe for the long term. And fired Ellerbe. And hired Tommy Amaker. And fired Amaker. And hired Beilein. After the game, Izzo praised Michigan's talent in a manner that was classy but inaccurate. He said he tried to recruit several of Michigan's players, then rattled off the names of Manny Harris, DeShawn Sims, Ronald Coleman and Zack Gibson. The truth is that Izzo's recruitment of Coleman and Gibson was light at best, and for good reason: Michigan State can, and did, get better players. The belief is that Beilein's team will be competitive next year and in the NCAA tournament the year after that. But right now he is giving too many minutes to players who can't win in the Big Ten.
New Tech fan blog: 'Shake and Bake' cooking up great future with ...
Rogers played a season high 31 minutes against New Mexico State. Not only does Smith leaving put pressure on Rogers to stay out of foul trouble, it means Kyle Gibson will continue to get all of his minutes at power forward.Coach Morrill talked about Gipson and how the two teams would match up against each other in his weekly press conference on Tuesday. On Louisiana Tech And Kerry Rupp..."He's adapted to his personnel. They are trying to play real aggressive man (defense). The nature of their team size-wise, they've been playing a little more zone and mixing to a couple of zones. I don't think he's probably where he would like to be in terms of how he would like to play until he gets more of his players in there. When you look at them, it starts with (Kyle) Gibson, because he is just a matchup nightmare for us because he is a guard playing the four.
Line change Scally leaves wrestling for hockey
One day, Jordan Scally had an epiphany. "It was about two weeks before the (winter) season was about to start," said Scally. "I just woke up one morning and said to myself, 'I have to play hockey.' " For three seasons, Scally was arguably Whittier Tech's top wrestler. But when the opportunity arose to return to his first love on the ice, the Wildcats senior could not pass it up. "It's been great," said the Georgetown resident and now Amesbury High defenseman. "It was time to change sports. I had been away from hockey for a few years. But I am getting back into it and I am coming into my own." Scally loved hockey from the start. Shortly after his family moved from Salem (Mass.) to Utah, the four-year-old Jordan begged his father, former Lynn Tech hockey player David, to let him join his brothers, future Pentucket players Sean and Nick, in the local youth hockey program.
