Breaking down the Indian gambling measures

I don't have to tell you how many kids this will educate, how much money will go to law enforcement, how much money will go to hospitals and to roads," Schwarzenegger told a group of business leaders in Salinas on Tuesday. "We need you to vote yes on those compacts because we need that money, especially now when we have this fiscal crisis."

But the nonpartisan legislative analyst has suggested the governor's revenue estimates are too optimistic.

Because the state wouldn't collect a big portion of the new money until the additional slot machines are up and running, state revenue would increase by less than $200 million over the next few years, according to a report by the analyst in November. That payment could rise to "the mid-hundreds of millions of dollars" as the casinos expand, the report said.

Charlie Brooker meets the main characters from US TV show The Wire

A while ago, I reviewed The Wire on my low budget, miserabilist BBC4 show Screen Wipe, calling it "the best TV show of the past decade" in the process. I was wrong. I hadn't seen the fourth season then, which subsequently convinced me it's the best TV show since the invention of radio.

How good is it? Put it this way: The Wire's so good, I've lost count of the number of people who've approached or emailed me just to thank ME for convincing THEM to watch it. The Wire's so good, I'm jealous of anyone who hasn't seen it yet, because they get to discover it anew. The Wire's so good, it's come to an end. Because that's what good things do, the bastards. The fifth and final season is currently airing in the US: it makes it to Britain later this year - although some of you may have already spotted the first seven episodes lurking on the internet.

Obama To Hit the Air in Bay Area

Clinton is the only one who left her name on the ballot. Even if voters wrote in Obama or Edwards, the Michigan Democratic Party said they would not count them. So, the NDP said it would not recognize the Michigan delegates. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Walton deputies to get driver training facility

Walton County deputies should be using a new 10-acre training facility this year. A driving facility to help train officers in backing, emergency braking, serpentine maneuvers, parking, J-turns and other precision actions should be complete by the spring. There will also be a skid pad where drivers will learn to control skids, fishtailing and spin outs. The cost for the facility is $357,823 and will be one of the most comprehensive and advanced driving training sites in the Panhandle, according to a Walton County Sheriff’s Office news release. The facility will be open to other emergency response agencies outside Walton County. It’s also expected to be used by the school district for teen driving programs. .

Snow, Cold, Wind Head Into Northeast

Power was out in 40,000 homes and businesses, roads were slick and most schools in the Buffalo area were closed.

Jean Ewing stood with her back to the wind while waiting for the Buffalo pharmacy where she works to open Wednesday morning. She said a double-whammy of ice and blowing snow made for a difficult commute into the city.

"It took me 10 minutes to open my car" because it was covered in ice, she said.

In northern Illinois, high winds downed power lines and knocked trees onto utility lines, causing nearly 14,000 customers to lose power overnight, mostly in Chicago's south suburbs, said ComEd spokeswoman Judy Rader. Service to all but 1,300 had been restored by Wednesday morning.

Thousands also lost power in West Virginia, Ohio and Illinois.

Live 'Dancing With the Stars' isn't a TV clone

Marie Osmond fell to the floor in a faint, Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryan got booted way early and an IndyCar champ beat out a Spice Girl for the twinkle-toes trophy.

And that was just one season.

The drama on Dancing With the Stars has risen so high it could rival an episode of Grey's Anatomy. No wonder the ABC show regularly draws more than 20 million viewers a week, according to Nielsen Media Research, second only in TV series popularity to American Idol.

Dancing With the Stars: The Tour is on the road again -- coming to Rupp Arena on Tuesday -- and its choreographer and dance captain, Louis Van Amstel, promises new routines and surprises.

People "think they've seen it already, and they think it's the same show," said Van Amstel recently.
