Berlin film festival program ranges from Oscar contender to Iranian ...

Films from as far afield as Iran and Japan will compete for the top prize at this year's Berlin film festival with the likes of strong Oscar contender "There Will Be Blood" in a program that also has something of a musical flavor. Twenty-one films are competing for the main Golden Bear award at this year's "Berlinale," whose program organizers presented Tuesday. The event _ the first of the year's major European movie festivals _ runs from Feb 7-17. Contenders include Isabel Coixet's "Elegy," based on Philip Roth's novel "The Dying Animal," and starring Penelope Cruz and Ben Kingsley; "There Will Be Blood," Paul Thomas Anderson's oil-boom epic, starring Daniel Day-Lewis; and Damian Harris' "Gardens Of The Night," featuring John Malkovich among others. .

Holden Caulfield: Giving Voice to Generations

Since his debut in 1951, Holden Caulfield — the funny, complex, wry protagonist of J.D. Salinger's classic The Catcher in the Rye — has given voice to generations of teenagers caught between childhood and the adult world.

One of the most censored books in recent U.S. history, The Catcher in the Rye is now a staple of many high school and college curricula. It's the coming-of-age story of 16-year-old Caulfield, who has flunked out of his prep school and is disillusioned with the world.

'Afraid of Growing Up'

"The problem with Holden is that to him, everyone after a while seems phony," says Tobias Wolff, author of novels including Old School and the memoir This Boy's Life. "He's afraid of growing up really, and the self-consciousness that enters into our lives, into our sense of ourselves and forces us to perform in public — he sees that and hates it.

Jindal nominates 3 for education board

John L. Bennett, the longtime principal of St. Aloysius Catholic School, was appointed to the state’s top school board Tuesday by Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Jindal’s other selections to the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education are: Penny Dastugue, of Mandeville, who just finished a four-year term as an elected member. Tammie A. McDaniel, of Oak Ridge, a former principal and teacher who also worked as a northeast Louisiana campaign strategist for Jindal in last year’s race for governor. All three are Republicans, like the governor. All three names are also subject to Senate confirmation.

Jindal said his three picks were not required to pledge support for charter schools and other forms of school choice.

"We didn’t have any litmus test," he said.
