'Sarkozy wants to marry ex-model'

The French weekly paper Le Journal Du Dimanche reported Sunday the French leader is planning to wed Bruni on February 8 or 9 and has already given her an heart-shaped diamond engagement ring.

A spokesman for the presidential palace told CNN they were offering no comment on the reports, which quoted unnamed sources.

The spokesman also refused to comment on media reports that Sarkozy would answer questions on his private life during his first presidential press conference of the New Year set for Tuesday.

Speculation about the French leader and Bruni has been rife ever since the two were photographed together during a day trip to Disneyland Paris last month.

However, opinion polls suggest the French public is growing weary of the intense media focus on the private life of Sarkozy -- who only divorced his previous wife, Cecilia, in October.

Web site to help women through divorce seeks funding

Dawn Haynes was organized, professional, and a standout student in the MBA program at Rollins College. But after her marriage of 17 years dissolved, Haynes stood in the kitchen of her new home, surrounded by boxes and feeling like she'd been "hit by a freight train."

"There were so many things that I needed to take care of, but I wasn't sure what that list was, or where to start," the Orlando marketing consultant and former airline executive said. "There was not a single resource that pulled it all together."

Now, a year and a half later, Haynes is trying to provide that resource through ReDesigning Women, a Web site aimed at helping the hundreds of thousands of women who navigate the divorce process each year.

Snow is in the North Bay's forecast as rain falls elsewhere

Snow will fall above 2,000 feet around the Bay Area, said National Weather Service forecaster Dan Gudgel, but the Ukiah area may experience a more unusual sight: white flakes falling as low as 500 feet.

"What we're having this week is what I consider a typical Gulf of Alaska-type frontal system," Gudgel said. "With this coming down, it's not unusual for snow levels to hit 2,000 feet. ... But Ukiah had residual cold air trapped in that valley, and cold air is more dense, and it stays lower."

There could also be lower-than-usual snow levels farther south, Gudgel said, noting it was 34 degrees in Santa Rosa this morning.

"I wouldn't be surprised to see a few flakes intermixed with rain (in Santa Rosa)," he said.

Any accumulation the North Bay flatlands will be light and won't stick around long, Gudgel said.

Worldwide Day of Play celebrates healthy lifestyles

We are here to celebrate play," said District 10 Councilmember Nancy Pyle. "Today is the fourth annual Worldwide Day of Play and San Jose’s first. When you go outside and play, you help fight childhood obesity and have great fun."

The Day of Play was sponsored by KaBOOM!, a community-based playground building organization, and Nickelodeon, the cable television channel that went "dark" for three hours. The day marked the fourth annual event for Nickelodeon to inspire kids to participate in the fight against childhood obesity.

The "Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Challenge" was created by Nickelodeon, in partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint initiative of the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Campaign 2008

Come February 5's Super-Duper Tuesday, when nearly two dozen states hold primary elections, Svedka is hosting New York and Washington galas to promote its bid to "put a fembot in the White House." Like any good politician, Svedka Grl robs the best themes from the competition.

Just consider the name of her bus: the Straight Shot Express. While other campaigns bring voters to the polls, "I promise to pick up voters from the polls and drive them to the party." There she'll serve the "Cosmo-Politician" and the "Global Cooler." And she'll push some reasonable positions: "Make cocktails, not war," and "Make handbags tax deductible." While she's late to the race, Svedka officials promise that she'll have her Web page up and running soon.

Bucking the Tide on Private Loans

As the scandals and debates over private lending have grown in recent months, conventional wisdom has held that private loans are a necessary evil. Sure, students and their families are taking on debt that is typically more expensive and more risky than federally backed loans. But as long as families feel that college costs are otherwise beyond their reach, private loans will continue to become more popular.
