School profile: Columbia Business School

One of the main reasons for this change of heart is that managers are being given positions of responsibility earlier in their careers, says Prof Hubbard.

And that is one of the reasons behind the change in curriculum. “People are getting leadership positions earlier in their careers so they need to have more than analytical skills."

With its strong ties to Wall Street, Columbia has long been viewed as one of the standard bearers for analytical skills, but these days communications and interpersonal skills sit alongside the numbers.

All participants entering the MBA programme can expect a suite of courses and extra-curricular activities that will teach them to manage individuals, teams, networks – and themselves.

Unlike similar courses at other business schools, the Columbia programme is based on academic research conducted by Michael Morris, a professor in Columbia's management division.

In His Element

Between shooting the final film of the El Mariachi/Desperado trilogy in Mexico, gearing up for a Spy Kids sequel, and planning a biopic about late blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, he seldom has time for journalists. In fact, he declined to be interviewed for this story. He just enjoys the heck out of what he does, says Bel Hernandez, editor and publisher of Latin Heat, an entertainment trade magazine that has followed his career. To him, its not work. Its something that keeps him going and something that he loves to do.Anointed one of the hottest filmmakers of his generation and praised for his ability to make hit movies on the cheap, Mr. Rodriguez remains unaffected by all the attention. Hed rather be on a set juggling duties as director, cameraman, film editor, special effects guru, and the guy who strums guitar during breaks.

No science in the PM’s ear: Canada dismisses National Science ...

The one scientist in this country who had direct access to the Prime Minister is being dismissed. Canada's National Science Adviser, Dr. Arthur Carty, was appointed by former Prime Minister Paul Martin to provide expert advice on the government's role in matters of science and science policy. Now, less than four years after the position was created, the Harper government feels that it's no longer necessary.

The National Science Adviser is a voice of reason to the government over actions it should take on issues such as climate change, genetically modified foods, managing fisheries, sustaining the environment - any time the politicians need to be educated on the basic science behind those often controversial issues. Of course, decisions are seldom made for purely scientific reasons; all too often, the interests of industry, special interest groups or a misinformed public will cloud the scientific truth.

Gang running ‘discount’ shop flees

These customers were being given a daily installment (at the rate of Rs 500 for every Rs 10,000 deposited) along with the total money deposited on the 18th day.

Yesterday being Monday, the Haripur village market remained closed. Today, when some customers reached the shop to collect their goods/daily installment, they received a shock of their life when they realised that the shop owner had fled.

An angry mob then broke open the locks of four shops, where Ganesan had stored the goods, and took away anything they could lay their hands on. Some labourers working nearby also joined the free-for-all.

By the time the police reached the spot, three shops had been looted. Policemen stood guard outside the fourth shop, as the word of the shop having closed down spread and hundreds of people gathered at the spot.

Brisbane blogger spreads school smut

SHE'S bitchy, biting, sarcastic and spiteful – and she has taken cyber bullying to new heights with a website that is terrorising students at Brisbane's elite private schools.

She is Gossip Girl Brisbane and her MySpace blog, created this month, already has attracted 470 users keen to use the site to denounce their peers with salacious details about their sexual orientation, drug problems, love lives and health woes.

Forget scribbling gossip on the back of the toilet door at school, it's now out there for millions of web users to view.

Gossip Girl does not name the girls she says are pregnant or the teens she says have had sex. She uses initials to indicate the person she is talking about.

The blog, which is updated daily, mirrors the Fox 8 program Gossip Girl, in which the identity of Gossip Girl remains a secret and everyone relies on her website for the latest scoop.

Blade Runner replicant checks into rehab

Actress Sean Young has voluntarily checked herself into rehab for alcohol abuse, following an unseemly outburst at Saturday night's Directors Guild Awards which saw her escorted from the premises.

Young, 48, who played replicant Rachael in Blade Runner (see pic), heckled director Julian Schnabel during his speech as a nominee for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, apparently insisting he hurry up. When Schnabel realised who was gobbing off, he suggested Young "have another cocktail". The actress was then removed from the building.

Her PR firm announced yesterday: "Sean Young voluntarily admitted herself yesterday to a rehabilitation center for treatment related to alcoholism. It is understood that Young has struggled against the disease for many years."

Young had a promising future following 1980s outings in Blade Runner, Stripes and No Way Out, but the wheels came off when she hit the bottle.

Florida adopts open-content reading platform

Tired of investing in expensive textbooks and proprietary software programs, Florida education officials are looking to an open online-learning platform to teach young students basic reading skills.

Advocates of the program say the idea that a public, collaborative, continuously modified online curriculum can be used in the classroom is gaining momentum in schools.FreeReading.net is a free, sequential, research-based reading intervention program designed for students in kindergarten through first grade.
