AFL legend Wayne Carey to break silence after Miami bash charge

I'm sure that all of you, together with the journalists who report the story (who crowned him King when he was 20 and didn't have a clue) and the executives who sacked him, lead pious, measured, untarnished, rainbow and butterfly lives. If you're going to crucify a man, have the decency to look in the mirror first...or at the very least enlist the help of your spell check.

De Palma can't redact his ire

Those of us who regard Brian De Palma as a great, misunderstood American director revere him for the same qualities, more or less, that make his detractors crazy. That is to say, it is impossible for him to make a movie without calling a lot of attention to the mechanics and artifice of making movies. .

AP-Pew Poll: GOP presidential candidates in early voting states struggle for supremacy

WASHINGTON (AP) _ No one Republican presidential candidate is a shoo-in in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, according to in-depth polling by The Associated Press and the nonpartisan Pew Research Center.

Across the three states, tight battles are being waged for voters' trust on Iraq, immigration and other key Republican issues and for control of pivotal groups including conservatives, white evangelicals and men. And it is Mitt Romney, not national front-runner Rudy Giuliani, who is ahead in New Hampshire and fighting for the lead in Iowa and South Carolina _ three very different races.

CAMPAIGN 2008

Mike Huckabee is an evangelical with political ambitions, but he sure doesn't act like Pat Robertson. He plays the guitar. He drops witty one-liners on the late-night talk shows. He resists being pushy or judgmental. He voices as much concern for postnatal life as for prenatal life. He seems genuinely concerned about the less fortunate, including the children of illegal immigrants. Given those qualities, it's probably not surprising that many old-guard leaders of the religious right seem uneasy about the former Baptist minister and Arkansas governor—or at least about his surprisingly strong showing in the Republican presidential primaries.

Is Huckabee the political expression of something new in the evangelical Christian movement? Some analysts think so. Rice University sociologist Michael Lindsay, writing in the the Immanent Frame, calls him a "new kind of evangelical that is less interested in 'taking back the country' for the faithful and more interested in his faith being seen as authentic, reasonable, and attractive." Dubbing this new type the "cosmopolitan evangelical," Lindsay, author of Faith in the Halls of Power, says that many who fit the label have become influential Washington players, still committed to the antiabortion and traditional marriage agenda but "also concerned about the environment and...federal support for the poor and suffering." Some of these cosmopolitan evangelicals are politically liberal, Lindsay explains, but just as many, if not more, are conservatives who favor a truly compassionate and less confrontational conservatism.

Dengue cases go up to 11

The city, with its numerous slums, was virtually waiting for an epidemic to break out.

Residents of Old Panchkula were particularly worried about their fate and the inadequacy with which the Health Department had been dealing with pools of stagnant water right under their noses.

Fuming was carried out a fortnight back by the department. Since then, we have not had any visit by Health Department teams. The condition in the market is particularly bad because we are here practically all day and cannot escape mosquito bite, said a resident.

The Chief Medical Officer, General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, Dr G.P. Saluja, said they had sent 15 samples to the PGI for testing.

Of these, we have been told that nine have tested positive for dengue. Three are negative and the report of three others is awaited, he stated.

But then that was before McCain's big Florida win Tuesday.

On the Democratic side, the combined results of three nightly samplings of 400 different voters - for Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday - found Hillary Rodham Clinton at 36 percent, Obama at 31 percent and John Edwards at 12 percent.

But when taken alone, Sunday's tracking - just a day after Obama's big win in the South Carolina primary - had Obama leading Clinton, 35 percent to 32 percent, with Edwards' share growing to 16 percent. And pretty much the same numbers came up Monday.

One caveat: A prominent political consultant following the numbers emphasizes that while a single night's tracking isn't considered statistically reliable, it does show movement and direction.

Any way you slice it, the source says, the presidential race here is definitely heating up.
