McCain and Clinton win in New Hampshire

Our country (and world) in these last two terms of Bush and regime is unprecedented devastation with countless dead and terribly wounded with our wars; unmet recognition of increased destruction of Palestine; an economy in free fall, etc……..change not for just change sake. Kennedy endorsement also shows that Obama will have the most influential Senator to help executive and legislative brances of government to work on change for seriously positive things, probably foremost more revealing and dealing with our wars and help to veterans. –writing as concerned citizen and also as daughter of POW turned foreign service officer and historian; sister of middle eastern scholar; et al

Monday's news briefs

Childrens racing begins at 2 p.m. followed by big kids and then by adults 50 and older. All participants must be registered by 1:30 p.m. Outhouses are built out of wood and cardboard, and must have a toilet seat and roll of toilet paper inside. They (outhouses) must be put on skis (metal will be disqualified) and pushed 50 feet one-by-one by two racers. Push bars are not to exceed 16 inches for adult racers, and children 12 and under should have push bars on each side for safety. Skis or a toboggan may be used for children runners. This year's theme is “Bring Your Dear to the 15th Ever Trenary Outhouse Classic." Many prizes, cash prizes and drawings will also be available. All proceeds are given back to the Trenary community. Press anger

We are shocked, like everybody else, at the inertia and ineptitude... Most surprising, President Kibaki, at whom the buck stops, and his rival Raila Odinga, other than that photo-ops session last week, have not taken the message of peace to the doorstep of their followers. We want to exhort President Kibaki to come out of State House and tackle the unfolding crisis. He cannot keep quiet when the country is burning. We also demand the same of Mr Odinga.

A slice of green in the ‘burbs

CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Ohio--The first brown highway sign said I could exit Interstate Highway 77 at Rockside Road and there I’d find a park.

That hardly seemed possible. I was no more than 10 minutes outside Cleveland’s Hopkins International Airport with the city’s skyline in the rearview mirror. I was driving through a land filled with office plazas, industrial parks and hotels that specialize in uniformity. It was a land of gas-station clusters, franchise food drive-ins and a class of strip mall even Starbucks might ignore.

Yet, in such a setting, caffeine might be the only answer. Or a park. I decided to believe the sign and see if I could slip into something more bucolic.

Focus on the gap: Programs are only a start

Considering the energy and brainpower he has thrown at examining the issues of race, ethnicity and education during the past year, Mr. O'Connell's proposals were underwhelming.

Coinciding with the release of the recommendations from his P-16 (pre-kindergarten through college) Council, they include uniform standards to improve the quality of preschools, more training for teachers and administrators in racial and ethnic awareness, a Web site to share best teaching strategies and a multimillion-dollar foundation grant to determine the scope of a state education data system.

In fairness to Mr. O'Connell, there are no simple answers to increasing the graduation rate and test scores of Latino and African-American children. And, with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposing massive cuts to K-12 education, this isn't a year for grand initiatives.
