Today High school competency testing set CARLSBAD — The New Mexico High School Competency Exam will be offered during the first four periods today (Jan. 30) in the main gym at Carlsbad High School. Any student who wishes to receive a NM high school diploma must take and pass all six parts of this test. All students are required to attend school during the test days. Those not taking the test will attend school as a regularly scheduled day. The CHAPS program will not be offered Wednesday. Parents should make sure students get a good breakfast and a good night's sleep prior to each test day. Students who do not pass a section of the test will have to retake that section next year. She had fallen way behind in her course work after spending most of her junior year recovering from surgeries and allergic reactions.

Today, a diploma is a reality for the Sauk Rapids-Rice senior, in part because of a program that helps students graduate who might not otherwise.

"I was thinking I was going to be waiting on tables all my life. Now I want to own my own restaurant," said Zwack, as she worked on a paper for school.

No Bond For Teacher Accused In Internet Sex Sting

ARLINGTON, Va. -- A Spanish teacher and track coach at Chantilly High School has been denied bond on charges he used his computer to solicit sex with a minor.

In denying bond Tuesday for Matthew McGuire, 29, an Arlington County judge cited the difficulty in regulating McGuire's access to the Internet.

McGuire's attorney had argued there was no evidence that McGuire would be an online predator if he was released. The defense claimed to have letters from 31 parents, teachers and students supporting McGuire. .
