Why are drugs present in school?

Visitors and locals alike often rephrase the famous Vegas saying, "What happens in New Orleans, stays in New Orleans. Teachers have a different take on Vegas' mantra of shamelessness - what happens in New Orleans happens in schools. Therefore, astute parents can't be surprised to hear about incidents of drug abuse in schools.

Have you talked to your teenager about the consumption of alcohol, illegal drugs and/or other substances? If you do, then you know that students regularly misuse drugs on and off their campuses. The term, "misuse," cannot be overstated because what drug could an emotionally and intellectually underdeveloped person use recreationally? Teenagers are naturally inquisitive beings. However, experimentation with mind-altering substances disrupts maturing intellectual processes that should eventually serve as the foundation for their thinking adult lives.

China can build things. Why can't India?

India has much more developed financial markets and independent regulatory systems. Indian companies are generally far more competitive and have much deeper managerial resources than the Chinese companies. They are much more innovative, unlike the Chinese who excel in copying western products and designs.

It is unfair to expect Indian cities to have the same facilities as in China, just after 15 years of opening up. And in these 15 years, infrastructure has been a focus area only for the last 5 years maybe.

If India can achive 8% growth with all these constraintts, it can defenitely do better in the longer term. India is not in any race with China. She needs to focus only on her on growth - a more equitable and balanced growth than the Chinese model - while ensuring the basic human dignity, liberty and freedom to all her people.

Charles McLaurin: Leading Eastover through first step

Charles McLaurin approached the six-page form on the desk in front of him cautiously, like a teenager facing an algebra exam.

Sitting at the Board of Elections office — wearing a green checkered button-up shirt, dark green pants and white tennis shoes — McLaurin repeatedly sought confirmation that he was putting the right information in the right box.

His wife, Shirley, stood over his shoulder snapping photos while he signed up to run for Eastover’s top elected seat.

"You can tell I’ve never done this before," said McLaurin, the town’s appointed interim mayor.

But then, nobody has. The small town a mile east of Fayetteville across the Cape Fear River incorporated this summer.

For many people in this quiet, rural town of 3,100, the Jan.

Barbee’s 'Wild West Country’ premiers

Local filmmaker Chuck Barbee unveiled the rough cut of his documentary 'Wild West Country,' last week to many of the people and organizations that helped make the long awaited project possible. The theater was completely full at each of the four showings, a testament to the community support the project has gathered since Barbee began it two and one-half years ago.

'Wild West Country,' which Barbee plans to be a six-episode series about the history of the Kern Valley based on the books of historian Bob Powers, has been a long time dream of Barbee's. As a child, he grew up coming to the Kern Valley with his family to hunt and fish, and in his teen years, his family moved to the area. Barbee graduated from Kern Valley High School in 1959, and then moved to pursue a career in Hollywood.

Bringing Raiders into this century

As for the calendar being returned because of the girls being in it, that seems very strange. I wouldn't imagine he would prefer a calendar with a bunch of rugby players hanging up on his wall. Anyway, if your family truly are supporters of Barrow rugby, how about supporting the efforts to bring the club into this century, instead of publicly criticizing them. And why shouldn't that involve some pretty girls (who said they were going to be naked?). They couldn't exactly do it in polo neck jumpers now could they? So, from a male dedicated rugby fan of many years, I say, don't let anyone spoil a fun day out. Go girls. Good luck and I am sure you will only help to bring in the crowds, something for everyone. Surely it can only help make it a fun-filled family day out for girls and boys, young and old alike.
