Superintendent's personnel file shows concerns

CARLISLE — As assistant superintendent for Carlisle Local Schools, Tim McLinden got high marks.

"I suspect he will be an outstanding superintendent," former Superintendent Dennis Hern wrote in McLinden's first evaluation in 2001. "I have no suggestions for improvement."

Keeler: Top eight in Iowa athletics for 2008

The formal audition begins March 22, when the NCAA womens basketball tournament graces Wells Fargo Arena for the first time. Player or pretender? In Indianapolis, they wont let you throw the big parties the mens hoops tourney, the wrestling championships until you prove you can handle the little ones.
Its big, Calli Sanders says, really, really big.

You could the say the same thing about 2008. The new year shapes up to be a massive one for sports in the metro from the resurgence of Drake mens basketball to the return of the Indy Racing League (if you leave now, you just might make it) to the quest of Shawn Johnson, that whirling dervish from West Des Moines, for Olympic gold.

But 2008 could also be the year Des Moines establishes itself as a contender, an honest-to-God contender, for big-time NCAA sporting events.

It takes more green to fill grocery bags

You'll get your $300 as a credit on your tax return in spring 2009. The same would apply if you made too much money in 2007 to be eligible for the payments now, but made much less in 2008 and were therefore eligible. You'll be able to claim your credit next year.

Q: My child was under 17 last year, so I claimed him as a deduction. But he's not eligible for me to claim this year. Will I still get a payment?

A: You'll still get your money based on 2007 income and dependents. You won't have to give back money that was paid "by accident."

Q: Where will the IRS mail the check?

A: The check will be mailed to the address the IRS has on file. If your address has changed, you need to notify the IRS to make sure you get any check or correspondence, said spokesman Chris Kerns.

Obama visits hometown of grandfather

The Illinois senator returned to the story that started his campaign a year ago, spinning the narrative of a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya, who "span miles and generations, races and realities," what he called "an American story." He had never visited El Dorado before Tuesday.

Senator says no snub of Clinton

Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday sought to quell talk that he deliberately snubbed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, his rival for the Democratic nomination for president, during Monday night's State of the Union address. "Sen. Clinton and I have had very cordial relations off the floor and on the floor," he said. Obama said he was surprised by the reports and photographs showing him turning away when Clinton approached to shake hands with Massachusetts Sen.

Bush touts economic fix-it plan for nation

WASHINGTON -- In his final State of the Union address Monday night, President Bush urged the House and Senate to work together swiftly to pass a $150 billion stimulus package that would give most of the nation's families tax rebates and businesses incentives to invest in new equipment.

To an increasingly jittery nation, Bush acknowledged that economic growth was slowing, prices were up for food and gas, and the housing market was declining, and he vowed to act quickly. "At kitchen tables across the country, there is concern about our economic future," Bush said.

Racist displays persist at Minn. college

Bisharo Iman hoped college in St. Cloud would be different than attending high school there - no more taunts of "Go back to your country" aimed at her Somali dress, no more being slammed into lockers.

"I did get away from it - for a while," said Iman, a junior business major at St. Cloud State University.

That was before a frightening six-week stretch in November and December when vandals carved or scrawled more than a dozen swastikas and other racist images on campus walls, elevators and bathroom stalls.

The spate came as a setback to this central Minnesota university, which has spent more than $1 million, thousands of hours and untold energy in recent years trying to undo its reputation as hostile toward racial and ethnic minorities, an image so entrenched that some refer to the surrounding town as "White Cloud."

"Do I groan and say, 'Goodness, not again?' Of course I do," said Earl Potter, president of the school situated in a quiet, overwhelmingly white city of about 60,000 on the Mississippi River that has seen an influx of Somali immigrants.

Visiting Au Pairs Help Bring Germany To SBHS

Two of Stone Bridge High School's German classes got a lesson on Germany from some nationals Wednesday. Three women, who are in Loudoun working as au pairs for a year, sat with the classes for an hour and answered questions about what life was like in Germany and how it differed from the U.S. Students got the women's thoughts on everything from music and food to the popularity of MySpace and what teens do for fun on the weekends."It's nice to get to know other cultures and be able to tell them about Germany," Julia Wurm, 19, who takes care of two children in Ashburn, said. "It's good for us, too, because we get to know what it's like in German classes in American schools."The visit was the idea of Teresa Breitenthaler, Stone Bridge's German teacher. Breitenthaler got in contact with Kathleen Schultz, who is the local coordinator for au pairs in the area."There are very few opportunities for the kids to use their German skills," Breitenthaler said.

Policing the Dorms

Attempting to end its reputation as a party school, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst has changed a number of police practices over the last couple of years to cut down on drug activity and to increase campus safety. But the changes have caused some student unhappiness — evident in a protest Tuesday — as convictions soar for drug use, and claims swirl that officers are violating rights by randomly patrolling hallways to catch students smoking pot.
