Southgate keen to keep Downing

I know it has been a frustrating and a difficult period for Stewart, there was speculation about him earlier in the month.

"But we have made it clear he is a big part of our club and a big part of our future. He knows what I feel. We want to get him sorted on a better contract than he is on.

"I know the agent said there wouldn't be any more negotiations but we would say you must always continue talking and keep opportunities open."

Southgate added that neither Spurs nor any other club have come forward with an offer for the player.

He said: "We have had no written bid at all. We have telephone conversations about almost all our players but until something is more concrete there is never a decision to make.

"But Stewart is not a player we are prepared to lose, at this time especially."

One player who has left Boro for Tottenham this week is former Newcastle and Real Madrid defender Jonathan Woodgate.

Boogie Down In The Nashville Town

Alternately, for live shows on a smaller scale you can catch a local band at one of their haunts around town. Glossary plays Nashville style honkey-tonk but with a modern edge, while Trauma Team reminds the world that politicized post-punk is still alive and well in the hills of Tennessee.

On a nice day, pay a visit to Centennial park, home to a Parthenon replica, and then get breakfast at the Pfunky Griddle, a make it yourself style breakfast place with on table griddles. To end your evening right, head over to Robert's Western World and grab a burger and a beer in the bar that both Tom Petty and Alison Kraus have graced with their presence.

Dad: Plainview teen killed was cautious driver

Between hugs and condolences from friends, Jerry Assa recalled how he cautioned his son, Brian, about the dangers of speeding when behind the wheel of a car.

"I spoke to him so many times," Assa said Saturday, a little more than 12 hours after his 16-year-old son died in a crash in Woodbury that police said involved a high speed. "I even told him I use cruise control so I don't speed," said Assa, speaking outside his Plainview home.

Yesterday, David Darvas, 17, of Plainview, who was being driven in his 2001 Volkswagen Jetta by classmate Brian Assa, remained in Nassau University Medical Center in critical condition. Wayne Richards, a family friend from Plainview, said Darvas' condition had improved after surgery on Saturday. Among other injuries, Darvas suffered a broken leg, he said.

'Almost An Evening' opens off-Broadway at Atlantic

The sardonic post-show goings-on at a restaurant Coen subsequently depicts might easily happen at one of the Chelsea establishments close by Atlantic Stage 2. Nimbly directed by Neil Pepe with effectively minimal sets from Riccardo Hernandez, these quick, clever plays are light in texture yet thoughtful in content. Certainly the afterlife Coen imagines for "Waiting" is memorably scary in its eternal tedium. Driven by Abraham's glowering God, "Debate" eventually suggests a variety of New Yorker-style cartoons. Del Pentecost and the ever-marvelous Elizabeth Marvel complete Pepe's group of expert actors who make the most of their sophisticated material. Despite its modest name, "Almost An Evening" provides satisfying amusement in a vein that sometimes recalls Woody Allen in his least pretentious mode.

Florio, who led Conde Nast, dies at 58

NEW YORK—Steven T. Florio, a hard-driving executive who worked his way up the publishing ladder to lead the Conde Nast magazine empire, has died at age 58.

Florio died Thursday at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia of complications from an earlier heart attack, said Maurie Perl, a spokeswoman for Conde Nast Publications.

Florio was president and chief executive of Conde Nast through 2004, expanding it to the second-biggest magazine publisher in the country while many others were cutting staff and costs.

He managed 16 magazines aimed at well-to-do readers, selling advertising that appealed to their luxury tastes and reaching more than 70 million readers a month.

"I was, after all, Steve Florio, the Godfather, the Samurai, the leader, the warrior," Florio wrote in a 2005 proposal for an autobiography that he decided not to publish.

Justin Pizzi's Reporter's Notebook

As the leaves start to change, so are the lives of the children playing on the field below, a field full of trash and divots. While Saturday morning cartoons are on tv, more than 100 kids stretch, run drills and play flag football at 33rd and Diamond in Strawberry Mansion.

Rick Ford started a baseball league on the dusty diamond in the same park this summer. The start-up program drew 167 kids, mostly by word of mouth. Not one of the kids got in any trouble during the season. The ten teams played for free, thanks to equipment donated by the Phillies and Citizen's Bank. Rick says it all started with and idea and grew into something incredible and he wanted to keep the momentum going. .
