A drummer, A DANCER, and a singer play traditional Egyptian music at a Jesuit center in Minya unlike anything Ive heard before. Having made the trip out here from the US possessed by a cliché yet genuinely felt identity crisis, I found myself in a nation doing some soul searching as well. Was this coincidental, or is this part of a larger pattern? And why is it that both musical and visual folklore are now being explored, revived, redeveloped and repackaged on an unprecedented scale? Is it a local fad inspired by foreign interest the way Sufism has become? When Im faced with the fact that some of the most popular music videos are taking on traditional Egyptian personas like the fellaha, aalma (folkloric belly dancer), and the Hind-Rostom-type seductress coffee shop waitress to go with songs like the flirtatious Umma Naeema (Mother Naeema) or Mashrabsh El Shay (Dont Drink Tea), Im convinced that the trend isnt simply another excuse to show more skin.
Police officer finds son dead
The Glen Innes community is still reeling from another fatal car collision a week ago that claimed the lives of three local residents, Keith and Shane Holloway and Gary Fields. Yesterday they were again in mourning with two more funerals to be planned. Glen Innes Severn Council mayor Steve Toms said he was numb from the shock of another accident. I am only just coming to grips with the news and like the community I am shocked, in disbelief, he said. It should be noted these two accidents are completely unrelated. Our thoughts are with the families that are dealing with such terrible loss, he said. Police are continuing to interview witnesses and anyone with information should contact police on 6732 9799 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. .
9 Injured in S.C. Church Bus Accident
(AP) PICKENS, S.C. - A bus carrying children home from a church service ran off a rural highway and overturned, injuring nine people, one critically, officials said Thursday. The Lakeview Baptist Church bus crashed into a tree as it ran off the highway Wednesday night, Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth said. He said there was fog in the area, in Pickens County in the northwest part of the state, but didn't know if that contributed to the crash. "We were riding down the road and I felt a little bump and all of a sudden, the lights went out and we started rolling and the windows started busting," 10-year-old Austin Moore told WYFF-TV. "Everybody started screaming." One child was in critical condition and another in serious condition Thursday at Greenville Memorial Hospital, spokeswoman Karen Gecewich said.

Man, 20, charged in former Akins student's killing
A 20-year-old Austin man now faces murder charges in the death of a 16-year-old former Akins high school student. Jonathan Laughlin was shot to death in August of last year. After months of interviewing potential witnesses in the case, police have charged Douglas O'Brian Cubias with murder. Lydia Benavides placed fresh flowers at Laughlin's makeshift memorial in Southeast Austin. "White balloons for peace," said Benavides. It's a tribute to Laughlin. "My daughter is Samantha -- they were best friends," said Benavides. Benavides went there Tuesday when she heard the news -- police have charged someone with Laughlin's murder. "It's a relief, because the one who did it is now behind bars, and hopefully he will realize that what he did was nothing good.

I really can say that I don't know what happened with Jeezy and the DJs from North Carolina. I can say that according to rumor, the ban on Jeezy has been lifted. I think that some facts came out and some things were cleared up. Either way, Jeezy and Jamz worked it out. That's cool. You can't ban the Snow mMan. I will try to get the real deal asap. JAY-Z AS FRANK LUCAS? They actually look a lot alike. I used the old classic gangster pic of Jay for affect. So let me get this. Jay-Z wanted to play Frank Lucas in American Gangster, according to a source for Sandra Rose. Jay-Z gets turned down for role after Denzel enters the picture.

Taking in the trash
I don't know how many times I've said it, but the Chargers can't do anything right -- winning when they really didn't have the players to do so -- and now we've got LSU playing Ohio State, writs the LA Times' TJ Simers. Crown them. We know exactly who the Patriots are: the perfect football team, writes the Chicago Sun-Times Jay Mariotti. You get the point. From the Patriots fans perspective though, things couldnt have turned out any brighter yesterday. All that stands in the way of the Super Bowl are the banged-up Chargers, who could be without their best three offensive players -- LaDainian Tomlinson, Philip Rivers, and Antonio Gates -- on Sunday. Do you like Tom Brady or Billy Volek? Bill Belichick or Norv Turner? Despite the nationwide cry over the Colts losing, closer-to-home folks couldnt be more pleased.
