It’s Time to Hold Democratic House Leaders in Contempt

Like many of us, after having watched helplessly as the Bush administration trampled the Constitution and made a mockery of checks and balances over the course of five bitter years, I was hopeful when the American people elected a Democratic Congress in November of 2006. Finally, I imagined, we would have a whiff of legality and the hint of a restoration of the rule of law in the land. Perhaps we would even have congressional committees to oversee the administration's subversions of the rule of law and investigate the wide range of abuses that it had perpetrated since 2001.

There has been a bit of movement — which is why the thousands of Americans I have met who are appalled at these abuses but feel powerless to raise their voices effectively should take heart, but not stop their fight.

Dallas mayor pro tem Dwaine Caraway: outspoken, but vital

Caraway says his losses were a blessing in disguise.

Had he won sooner, he wouldn't have taken office alongside Mayor Tom Leppert, whom Mr. Caraway endorsed in a runoff against Mr. Oakley and with whom he has forged Dallas' most interesting odd-couple alliance.

Where Mr. Leppert is demure and careful, Mr. Caraway is outspoken to the point of being brash.

But together, they've made an effective pair, with a give and take that sees Mr. Leppert championing the cause of tearing down drug- and prostitute-infested motels, and Mr. Caraway delivering southern-sector votes in support of the Trinity River toll road.

"I could not have arrived at any better time and served with any better team, and that's why we're getting things done," Mr. Caraway said.

Besides, he said, it would be foolish to pick fights with people who can bring results for his district.

Crew negotiating fee for Celtic forward

Negotiations continued yesterday during the Crew's first day of preseason training at the SuperKick indoor facility in Lewis Center, where coach Sigi Schmid fielded at least one call from Zurawski's agent.

"I've still got to talk to the league and get back with the agent and see where we are," Schmid said. "I'm not as optimistic as I was three days ago."

How much Celtic is asking for the transfer and how much Zurawski is asking to be paid has not been made public, although it is estimated that both figures would be between $250,000 and $1 million.

McCullers would not divulge any dollar amounts related to the deal, including how much ownership was willing to spend. He said only that Hunt Sports Group was treating the situation in a "prudent" fashion.

Anderton: “The Strength to Care”

The air is full not with impatience and intolerance, but with the smells of food stalls representing a dozen cultures and music on the summer breeze.

We don’t have a history in New Zealand of celebrating our national day the way American’s celebrate Independence Day on the fourth of July, the French celebrate Bastille Day ten days later − or even as the Aussies celebrate Australia Day on 26 January. New Zealanders don’t feel a shared sense of ownership of the Treaty.

We won't have a true spirit of a national day until we all feel a stake in the Treaty of Waitangi.

I am worried that many New Zealanders see the Treaty as a document mainly for Maori. It isn’t − The Treaty is about much more than redressing past wrongs.
It contains important promises to Maori.

SAG award Winner list and Is Angelina Jolie Pregnant?

[Best Syndication] The Screen Actors Guild award ceremony was all about the designer gowns and Angelina Jolie wore a lose fitting flowing dress that could be covering up a pregnancy.

At least that was what everyone is talking about that she could be pregnant and is hiding it. Remember not to recently when Jennifer Lopez wore clothes to conceal her pregnancy, until you couldn't help but say yup, she's pregnant.

At this point it is only rumors that Angelina Jolie is pregnant. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had plenty of public displays of affection at the SAG awards.

Greener Pastures

Those with limited means suffer the most nutritionally, but many consumers will spend money on lattes and bottled water and complain about the high cost of farm-fresh food. "We’re spending half of our food dollars eating out," says Mr. Joseph, so if we can afford to eat out, we can afford to buy higher quality food. The cheap food mentality began a century ago when we transitioned from a society that grew its own food to one that purchased its food. At the same time, we went from a world in which we cooked our own food to one in which we buy packaged and prepared food. All this has evolved into what Mr. Joseph calls the "cheap diet," where almost a quarter of all meals are eaten in the car, or what Mr. Joseph refers to as "one-handed meals." The explosion of obesity and diabetes is finally providing us with a wake-up call on the consequences of the cheap diet.
