Report says men approached teen near school

Collier County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a report of a suspicious incident involving a child as she walked home from school in Golden Gate on Tuesday.

Reports say the girl's mother told deputies that her 14-year-old daughter had been approached by two males in a white car as she walked home along Tropicana Boulevard from Golden Gate Middle School in the afternoon.

The males, described as around 17 years old, made a U-turn and slowly pulled up behind her when one of the males yelled, “Get in the car and ride with us."

The girl ignored them and continued walking. When other traffic behind the car began blowing their horns for them to move, the car drove away.

No other details were available.

HOCKING THE HIGHWAYS: Toll road plan could be costly

A major concern is the type of control the government and public will have over the public benefit corporation Corzine wants to form to oversee the borrowing, said Humphreys, who testified before the Legislature in February.

What Humphreys doesn't want to see is a model being touted by the Federal Highway Administration, under which the Legislature would form the public benefit corporation, which could have the power to approve monetization terms or a contract.

"It just delegates authority ... you could say, let the public benefit corporation decide on the deal, and the Legislature doesn't have to approve it," Humphreys said.

That lack of oversight and accountability led to cost overruns and other issues with Boston's $14.7 billion "Big Dig" tunnel project to replace the Central Artery elevated highway through the city.

Hairless fakers, take note. Bald is in charge.

Somewhere in America, Stanley Tucci is yelling at his agent. Bruce Willis is crying in the arms of his latest hot young girlfriend, Ben Kingsley is planning some passive resistance and Patrick Stewart is setting his phaser on "stun."

Timothy Olyphant plays Agent 47, the bald assassin in the new action movie "Hitman." The controversy? Why have the well-coiffed Olyphant shave his head when there are so many bald actors who are perfect for the role?

Casting a haired actor to portray the iconic bald video game character is like hiring one of the Olsen twins to play Mama Cass in a Mamas & the Papas biopic. And it's not the type of thing that the offended parties will just ignore. One thing about bald dudes: Years of dealing with sunburns, razor accidents and hearing bad Mr.

Supervisors: Carefully consider Sheriff Carona's replacement

To the O.C. supervisors: As you undertake consideration of a replacement for Sheriff Mike Carona, I hope you will do so with due diligence and thoughtful, rather than expedient, deliberation. The department has been functioning at a satisfactory, if not excellent or optimum level. Here are some issues I would like you to consider:

Should the position of Sheriff be an elected position or appointed, where accountability to you as the Board enables swift and effective action should that position be abused or have negative consequences for the Orange County populace as a whole? Let's not have another fiasco.

You need not feel time pressure to replace the sheriff in the next few weeks with someone like Ralph Martin, Jo Ann Galisky or other readily available folks.

Let's get the best person for the job who has not just a vision, but has implemented their vision and has proven results.

Best of the Bay 2007

So I also tried to explain how you can play it safe to keep micro-monsters from spoiling your fun."

Best Bay Weekly Columnist of 2007 Bill Burton No surprise here. Bill Burton is king of the mountain all other columnists aspire to climb. Year in and year out, among friends and strangers, in every competition he rises to the top.

How does he do it?

"Listen to your readers," he says of the source of his success. "You learn after a while that your readers, not your editors, are the key."

Those are the words he spoke to his editor.

Politics on the Bay Bay Hero Bernie Fowler Again in 2007, you say Bernie Fowler is the Bay’s hero. Could it be that you — perhaps voters everywhere? — respect a person who takes a stand and stays on spot? That’s Fowler, whose passion for the Patuxent River continues into its ninth decade.

South Western's Tipton to continue basketball career at California, Pa ...

South Western High's Chad Tipton has just two games left in his high school basketball career, but announced Thursday he will continue his basketball career on a full athletic scholarship at California University of Pennsylvania.

His final choice of colleges was between California and Millersville University, with Randolph Macon, Hobart and Gettysburg all making his final five.

"I chose California because they have very strong academic and athletic programs," said Tipton about the NCAA Division II program. "I like the players and the coaching staff. They made me feel comfortable when I went to visit."

He added, "They lose five seniors at guard, so I'll have a chance to compete for playing time next year."

Tipton hasn't decided his major yet, but is leaning toward sports management.
