Canada abandons UN racism conference

Canada has withdrawn its support for a U.N. anti-racism conference scheduled to take place in South Africa next year after deeming it to be anti-Israel, a government official said Wednesday.

The so-called Durban II conference "has gone completely off the rails" and Canada wants no part of it, said Jason Kenney, Canada's secretary of state for multiculturalism and Canadian identity.

"We'll attend any conference that is opposed to racism and intolerance, not those that actually promote racism and intolerance," he said.

Kenney said that during the 2001 World Conference Against Racism in Durban, Arab and Muslim countries criticized Israel, prompting Israel and the United States to walk out in protest. But he added that Canada remained to speak up for Israel.

Manchin files for 2nd 4-year term

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) _ With no opponents filing from either party, an estimated $2.1 million war chest and a positive national profile, Gov. Joe Manchin was all smiles Tuesday as he submitted his candidacy paperwork for a second term.

"I have no personal agenda except to make West Virginia better," the 60-year-old Democrat told reporters afterward.

First Lady Gayle Manchin joined her husband for the announcement. So did many of the business and labor leaders whose groups helped form the wide-ranging coalition that propelled Manchin from the secretary of state's office to the governor's mansion in 2004.

Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin, D-Logan, and House Speaker Rick Thompson, D-Wayne, were among several lawmakers on hand.

During Manchin's tenure, the Mountain State has enjoyed strong revenues that have helped close gaps in ailing pension funds by more than $1.8 billion.

Everywhere you look, there's a war of words

Mamet would come in as a heavy favorite, but insiders praise the canny choice of Blanchett, who was nominated as best actress for playing Queen Elizabeth and best supporting actress for playing a man (Bob Dylan in "I'm Not There").

A panel of martial artists will discuss whether they'd rather meet Viggo Mortensen ("Eastern Promises") in a dark alley or risk a shave from Johnny Depp ("Sweeney Todd"). Other likely topics for the evening include " 'Ratatouille' - How the Hell Do You Pronounce It?" and "Do Writers Matter?"

"We're harking back to the glory days of 'Siskel and Ebert,' " said longtime Academy Awards show producer Gil Cates. "We believe the public cares deeply about what people have to say when they argue about movies. In fact, they may care more about that than they do about the movies themselves."

The Super Bowl: Super Bowl XLII has "blowout" written all over it.

Gunman in Pamela Smart case seeks sentence reduction

In the motion, Flynn asks for a sentence reduction because he has now spent more than half his life in prison.

"He has used those years to develop from a boy into a man of great character, fully rehabilitated and ready to contribute to society upon his release from incarceration," says his lawyer, Cathy Green of Manchester, New Hampshire.

That's quite a contrast from the angry and withdrawn teenager who, as a high school sophomore, shot Gregory Smart in the back of the head as Smart begged for mercy from his knees. The murder scheme was concocted by Pamela Smart, who is serving a life sentence in a New York prison for her role.

Assistant Attorney General Kirsten Wilson said reducing his term would undermine the sentencing goals of punishment, rehabilitation and deterrence.
