Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda Delivered Policy Speech to the ...

TOKYO, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda delivered a policy speech in a plenary session of the Diet on January 18, 2008.

Prime Minister Fukuda stated in his speech, "There are many policy issues that must be addressed in this Diet session as well, such as the budget and other important bills that are directly related to the daily lives of the Japanese people. I firmly believe that it is precisely the responsibility of those in politics vis-a-vis the people to ensure that the ruling and opposition parties conduct thorough discussions based on a relationship of trust and reach decisions to conduct the affairs of state. I will continue to do my utmost to conduct responsible politics, based on the foundation of the coalition government of the Liberal Democratic Party and the New Komeito Party, by providing an explanation of policies clearly and in detail, and by proactively incorporating the views of the opposition parties."

Prime Minister Fukuda concluded his speech to say, "I am determined to create that nest built on trust which fosters progress between the people on the one hand, and the administration and politics on the other, so that Japan will make progress towards a vibrant nation that contributes to the world."

The outline of the speech is as follows: (Introduction) (Guiding principles) - Based on these five guiding principles, I will conduct the affairs of state.

Kicking around The Bucket List

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. Screenwriter Justin Zackham admits he put a bit of his own travel ambition into The Bucket List.

"The truth is that the locations in the film the Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, Everest and the Great Wall of China are all destinations on my own personal bucket list," he writes in an e-mail.

The Bucket List brings actors Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman together as cancer patients who become buddies and undertake "the road trip of a lifetime." This pair goes everywhere on Nicholson's private jet which would carry a price tag of at least $54,000 for the journey they took.

So, how much would it cost to do the Bucket List itinerary in style? It's about $105,730 for two and that's if you stay in each place longer than a Hollywood scene change.

Higher) education is at a crisis point, the result of uncontrolled cost increases over the past 20 years that have greatly exceeded the rate of inflation or annual consumer price indexes," the Houston Chronicle observes in an editorial. "Tuition forces parents to pull all-nighters, too," adds Paul Daugherty in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

If something isn’t done soon to slow or defray the escalating cost of a college or graduate school education, low and moderate-income students and their families will be stranded on the bus. An estimated quarter million prospective students a year are now being shut out of the system because of tuition costs and other factors, according to The National Center of Pubic Policy and Higher Education.

There should be no higher a priority in our national agenda.

Political background to the CPE protests

We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle.

In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to “reform” the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is “reforming” France’s labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it was—an attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.

Kits target underage drinking in Hawaii

Parents who want a free alcohol testing kit may call the Honolulu Liquor Commission 24-hour hot line at 523-4194.

A saliva alcohol test will be mailed to them.

The test measures approximate blood alcohol levels within two minutes, but directions must be followed closely.

To test:

Open the package and remove the test strip. The reactive pad on the end of the strip should be a light cream color.

Saturate the reactive pad with saliva.

After two minutes, observe the color change. A color change of green or blue indicates the presence of alcohol.

The approximate blood alcohol concentration can be determined by comparing the color of the reactive pad to the color chart on the back of the test package.

If the Pats win, are they the best team ever? Maybe ...

Forty-two of the 46 winners of the Associated Press NFL MVP award have been either quarterbacks or running backs. Into this breach each year steps the Tuesday Morning Quarterback Non-QB Non-RB NFL MVP Award -- see the 2007 winner below. But first, the Super Bowl. Let's ask what seem to be the two big questions about the upcoming game. First, if New England wins, are these Patriots the best team ever? Second, if the Giants win, will that constitute the greatest upset ever?

If New England wins, the Patriots will not be the greatest team ever -- at least conditionally, until such time as the NFL reveals what was in the Patriots' cheating videos and documents that the league destroyed in September. Maybe once we know the full truth, then a 19-0 Patriots team could be considered the greatest, depending on what the full truth turns out to be.
