Issues take back seat at debate as Obama and Clinton tangle

Example #1 comes from Michigan, where John McCain last week told the truth when he said that many of the formerly great Michigan industrial jobs will never come back. Romney, on the other hand, sucked up and told everyone they will. I call B.S. on that. Joe blow American can't handle the truth that the halycon days of the 50s are over for good in this global economy and Romney wins big time.

Example #2 comes from the Obama campaign. In the Nevada debate he was asked about his biggest weakness. Hmmm, do we all have weaknesses? Last time I checked we do. Well, he tells the truth and says he's not the greatest with paperwork. Edwards, on the other hand, says his biggest weakness is that "he cares too much". Hillary adds that her biggest weakness is that she gets too impatient with the speed of change.

LI lawyer wins Billy Joel role in 'Movin' Out'

Matthew Friedman was ready to give up.

He was a 30-something attorney from Dix Hills and he was reaching that point - the one dreamers know all too well, the one where it becomes clear that it is time to let it go.

He had his share of near successes in his quest to become a professional musician and follow in the footsteps of his hero, Billy Joel. But each time, he came up a little short. Maybe, he thought, it was never going to happen.

Still, he notes, interfaith relations have improved, and some in power have taken steps both to open a dialogue and ensure Copts can exercise their full legal rights.

“I believe we need to spend more effort on education to teach children about what unites us as opposed to what separates us,” he says. “There needs to be more time spent on teaching children the core values that make us all Egyptian and less time stuffing their minds with information they will forget the day after their exams.

“We also need to be more willing to address the touchy issues with one another, both officially and unofficially. I believe that there needs to be an open and frank discussion between the leadership of this country and the leaders of the two religions in which they engage in a real conversation about the problems and truly attempt to come up with effective solutions.

Calathes brothers learned on backyard court

The backyard basketball court at the Calathes home in Florida hasn't aged as well as the prodigious progeny it helped produce.

The concrete court, poured years ago by father John, is worn, the edges frayed. The scene of so many basketball battles rarely gets much use.

Brothers Pat and Nick Calathes may shoot an occasional jumper when home on their college semester breaks. But the court on which father often would pit brother against brother has faded like the handprints with which the boys christened it.

"The rain and the weather have worn them down, but they're still there," John Calathes said of the imprints. "About a year ago, Pat put his hand up against his, and he's just got huge hands now."

When John Calathes built the court, he never imagined his sons would grow so tall or scale heights in basketball few siblings reach.

Health Department kick-starts immunization drive

ST. CROIX - The V.I. Health Department on Thursday announced the launching of its "Take Your Best Shot" campaign aimed at increasing local immunization rates among adolescents and encouraging adults to also get immunized for once common illness, some of which experts say are re-emerging.

Health Commissioner Vivian Ebbesen-Fludd said there had been talks in the past of boosting immunization among children ages 11 to 18, but those plans never got off the ground. Last month's outbreak of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, at a private school on St. Croix spurred the department in to action.

Health officials said Thursday that the Country Day School students who were infected with pertussis were mostly the older children who had not been immunized with the new vaccine.

We were recognized early on as the team to beat, and the first several games only encouraged such aspirations. That we lost our starting QB to injury seemed barely to slow us down, although we did lose a game. Still the dream was there. Our second QB was as good as the first, but another player was the heart and soul of that team. Pat Landry was a tight-end and linebacker who also played on the kick off team. He was a ferocious tackler whose bone rattling hits on opponents fired up the defense and the crowd. He was a monster with an irrepressible spirit and an infectious will to win. At mid-season we sat atop the district standings at 4-1, tied with the surprising Eau Gallie Commodores, whom we were to visit next. As that game began, we lost our second string QB in the first quarter. Our third string QB had recently been converted from receiver.
