US 'doomed' if creationist president elected: scientists

In 2004, a Pennsylvania school district found itself at the center of a national storm after its education board voted to require that a statement on creationism be read to students when they began learning about evolution in science class.

The school board was ousted the following year.

"Science, Evolution and Creationism" targets the general public and teachers, and presents in simple terms the current scientific understanding of evolution and the importance of teaching it in the science classroom.

A day after his win in Iowa, Huckabee toned down his anti-evolution stance, saying in a television interview that the question of whether to teach creationism in schools was "not an issue for our president."

MC proposes to abolish enforcement wing

The Municipal Corporation has proposed to abolish the enforcement wing of the MCC. This despite the fact that the MC leaves no stone unturned to announce its efforts to remove encroachments across the city. The proposal to abolish the enforcement wing, however, is being kept under wraps.

The proposal was put before the screening committee last month, which was chaired by the Commissioner Mr PS Aujla.

When complaints of corruption were highlighted in the enforcement wing last year, the house had passed a proposal that appointments of inspector and sub- inspectors should be on the rotation basis of six months. But that has not even been partially followed by the corporation till date.

Sources, however, state that this proposal won't go down well as shutting down a department was not the solution.

Charges dismissed in juvenile's death

A judge dismissed the charges against five counselors in the death of an East Baltimore teen at a Carroll County school for juvenile offenders, saying yesterday that a failure to call for help does not constitute reckless endangerment.

Carroll County Circuit Judge Michael M. Galloway ruled that although counselors are accused of waiting 41 minutes to call 911, reckless endangerment charges should be dismissed because that law applies to acts, not failure to take action.

The ruling outraged the mother of 17-year-old Isaiah Simmons, who died at the privately run Bowling Brook Preparatory School, and led her to renew her call for federal charges.
