Health Care

I don't want to exaggerate the good news. Europe continues to have many economic problems. But who doesn't? The fact is that Europe's economy looks a lot better now — both in absolute terms and compared with our economy — than it did a decade ago.

Novice in running for post of sheriff

He also wants to increase deputies' interaction with Pasco children at schools and community events to rebuild their trust in law enforcement.

Doing so, he said, would improve the drug and gang problems in the county.

For now, his campaign headquarters is a small table with a lamp and a couple of notepads inside his spacious workshop. He lives with his wife, Mary, on about 4 acres in a house he built in 1975, when the nearest neighbor was 2 miles away.

Kinzy, who wears all denim and speaks with a Florida native's twang, is an outdoorsman at heart. He loves hunting and fishing and escaping to the mountains in his motor home. He also holds a fourth-degree black belt in karate.

He has a high school diploma and a few credit hours from Pasco-Hernando Community College.

Pat McKee: High School Q&A

Question: I was reading that the Oregon-Davis girls basketball team has won 37 straight games. What is the record for longest winning streak? (Cory from Pendleton)

Answer: The girls basketball state record for girls basketball consecutive wins is 57 by Fort Wayne Northrop; it was an undefeated state champion in 1985-86 and returned to the finals again in 1986-87 before losing.

Bedford North Lawrence won 55 in a row from 1990-92, and Martinsville won 55 in a row from 1996-98. Also, North Vermillion won 50 in a row (2001-03), Bloomfield won 48 straight (1974-76); and East Chicago Roosevelt (1976-78) and the old Ladywood-St. Agnes of Indianapolis (1974-76) each won 45 in a row.

Bedford North Lawrence holds the girls basketball state record for consecutive regular-season wins (88) that stretched over four seasons.

A Little League fights to stay alive

He put the fliers in local elementary schools and took out an ad in the St. Petersburg Times.

In order to make the league free, Carson had to come up with some money. He estimates the cost per player is $125, which includes insurance and uniforms. With 50 kids currently signed, that's $6,250 that needs to be covered.

He solicited donations from two local McDonald's, which came through with $1,000 each. The rest of the money comes from Carson. He said 5 percent of sales from his water purification business, as well as fundraisers from his other team, the St. Petersburg Hurricanes travel softball team, will help fund Meadowlawn this season. He will also solicit other local businesses for sponsorships. Registration continues today and Saturday at the complex behind Lynch Elementary.

It would be a match made in QB heaven

Going into last weekend, it was possible the Super Bowl would pair Peyton Manning versus Eli Manning. Promoters were excited, though to me the prospect sounded tedious -- the game would have been indistinguishable from the commercials. Going into this weekend, there is a solid chance the Super Bowl will match Brett Favre against Tom Brady. That would be arguably the best quarterback pairing in Super Bowl history, and could lead to a Nielsen record that will never be broken.

If the Packers meet the Patriots in Glendale, Ariz., the game will match two future first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterbacks both playing at the height of the powers. In terms of story lines, such a Super Bowl would be brimming. Patriots' faithful could be rooting for the first-ever 19-0 finish; Patriots haters could root for New England to stumble at the last; traditionalists could root for a small town over a big metropolis; a team with an old-fashioned image would face the team that represents hypermodernism.

Ed LaDou, 52; chef pioneered gourmet pizza revolution

In the days when pizza toppings mostly consisted of pepperoni, sausage, onions and peppers, chef Ed LaDou was a pioneer, adding gourmet toppings that had never before graced the face of pizza.

As the first pizza chef at Wolfgang Puck's Spago and a developer of the first menu at California Pizza Kitchen, LaDou was an instrumental figure in a distinctly Californian phenomenon: the revolution that gave the world such innovative creations as the barbecue chicken pizza, pizza with breast of duck and hoisin sauce, pizza with marinated shrimp.

LaDou, who later opened his own restaurant, Caioti, died of cancer Dec. 27 at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica. He was 52.

"Ed really set the tone for the pizza," said Mark Peel, a former chef at Spago who now owns Campanile in Los Angeles.
