Former VC teacher arrested on sex charges

William Beeson, a former English and theater arts teacher at Virginia City High School, has been arrested on sexual assault charges.

According to Sgt. Ken Quirk of the Storey County Sheriff's Office, Beeson was arrested at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Piper's Opera House, where he serves as program director.

He was charged with one count of suspicion of felony sexual assault of a child under the age of 16, one general count of suspicion of felony sexual assault and one count of suspicion of misdemeanor unlawful conduct with a child.

The arrests were a result of a warrant out of Virginia City Justice Court arising from a previous investigation, Quirk said.

Quirk also said the second count of sexual assault is the alternative count if the first count is not successful.

Its Official. Chrysler Will Build VW's Bus

After kicking around the mill for a few months, Volkswagen confirmed today that Chrysler will build VW a minivan it can sell for around $30,000 off Chrysler's successful Caravan/Town & Country model.

VW has been stymied for some time in the van category, because the Microbus (pictured above) concept it showed a few years back at the Detroit Auto Show could not be built for less than $35,000, and some say more because of the weakeneing U.S. dollar. Too expensive for a minivan, even a redo of the legendary Microbus.

The van VW gets from Chrysler will probably not be called the Microbus, nor is it likely to have the stow-n-go seating design Chrysler has in the current van. Indeed, it will be a challenge for VW to make the Chrysler van feel like a real Volkswagen. But the executive who is championing the project, Wolfgang Bernhard, is probably best equipped to make it happen.

Rudd in talks with RBA chiefs

Well I may have slept most of my way through economics at Uni, but as far as I see it, if there is money out there, people will spend it, and prices will move up until people stop spending. And as people are continuing to spend in record amounts, prices will rise. The thing is, people are spending what they don't really have, but they will look anywhere to blame accept themselves. All you will see from Rudd is as someone else put it in this forum, chest beating, because that is about all he can and all he will do.You voted him in, accept the consequences of your own actions and don't blame anyone else.

Andrew I think that you not only slept through most of your Uni economics lectures but you have also been asleep for the last ten years of Howard coalition hypocracy.

A tough choice for L.A. teachers

As an urban high school teacher, I'm ceded the moral high ground in most encounters with people in more highly compensated fields; invariably, they tell me how much they admire what I do. Although they rarely say so explicitly, they regard my work -- the students -- as difficult and cannot imagine themselves in my shoes, just as I can't imagine rushing into burning buildings as a firefighter.

These same people frequently characterize my employer, the Los Angeles Unified School District, as an unmanageable failure. There's some truth in that, but our schools' mission is far more difficult than critics understand. If it were easy to educate children raised near or below the poverty line, most from homes in which English is not spoken, then L.A.'s public schools would produce better results.

Plugged In

In an interview with ABC recently, Arrington said all of the candidates seem to be tech-savvy except McCain, who says he doesn't use a computer.

Don't you think the president should at least be able to do a Google search? Here's an interview this morning with Arrington on Fox News where he talks about his picks.

Superintendent Pierczynski to retire

After seven years as superintendent of the Carson City School District, Dr. Mary Pierczynski announced Tuesday she will retire when her contract expires in August.

"It was a difficult decision because I've really enjoyed the work. I've enjoyed the children," she said in an interview before the Carson City School Board meeting Tuesday evening. "This has been a wonderful experience, and I hope there are new opportunities out there."

Pierczynski began her teaching career in 1971 in North Carolina for six years.

She then moved to the airline industry for 10 years. She was base manager of Republic Airlines in Minneapolis when she met Dr. Ed Pierczynski, a family practitioner in Carson City, whom she later married.

Upon moving to Carson City in 1977, Pierczynski returned to education as a guidance counselor at Carson High School.
