Kats trying to fix FBS problems

Sam Houston State hasn't had much success when it comes to facing Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. In fact, the Bearkats (2-1) are 2-20 heading into today's contest at Oklahoma State. The two FBS wins came in 2000 (21-14 over Louisiana-Lafayette) and 2001 (a 20-9 victory over Louisiana-Monroe, long before head coach Todd Whitten took over the SHSU program. Since Whitten was named the head coach in 2005, the Bearkats are 0-4 when facing top level schools.Granted, two of those losses have come to FBS top 25 teams (then No. 7 Texas last season and then No. 19 Texas Tech in 2005). But the other two were supposed to be winnable or at least competitive matchups. The Bearkats just didn't play up to their abilities. Before being drubbed by the Red Raiders 80-21, SHSU stayed with Houston only to have dropped passes, penalties and turnovers result in a 31-10 loss. The same thing happened last year at SMU.

Obama vs. Clinton – October 2002

And finally, voting for funding, contrary to what we like to say here on the site, is NOT voting to support the war. When you have a nutcase in the White House, who will keep those boys in there no matter what, we owe it to them to keep them armoured and fed, at the very least. Obama sees the need to fund them and work for their safe return at the same time. It's painful sometimes to work that way, but that is how deals are honestly made. Politics is about getting as much as you can get, without expending everything else in the process.

Elgin stars dance to raise more than $11,000 for PADS shelter

Kathy and Pat Hannell of Huntley have danced together since they were 16 years old. The couple first took the stage together as dance partners in a production of Pygmalion during their junior year at St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin.

Now 61, they lit up the stage Saturday, Jan. 19, swing dancing to the iconic World War II song, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, in Elgin Stars Dance for PADS, part of Public Action to Deliver Shelter of Elgin Inc.'s Winter Harvest for the Homeless fundraiser at The Stonegate Conference & Banquet Centre in Hoffman Estates.

Course designed with looks, leisure in mind

Founders Club owner Ed Jerdon said 275,000 yards of dirt was moved to build the course, particularly on what had been a flat front nine, and Walker was there to see most of it.

A former lead designer for Gary Player Design, Walker said he was present for about 80 percent of the construction.

"All the courses I've been involved with that were [voted] top 10 in a state, I noticed those were the ones I spent the most time on the site," Walker said. "I'd rather build a Lamborghini than a Cadillac, and the way to do that is spend time on them. I decided to get my hands dirty and I think it paid off."

The course has a natural look, featuring orange/pink sand in vast waste bunkers and a lot of native grasses such as love and bluestem that course operators plan to keep manicured so balls will be findable and playable.
