FBI arrests child porn defendant at court

A Novato school bus driver fighting child pornography charges in Marin was arrested at the county courthouse Wednesday on a federal warrant in a related case, authorities said.

Remsen McGinnis Benedict, 52, was arrested by the FBI outside the courtroom where he was scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing. Benedict was booked into Marin County Jail pending a federal court hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco.

Authorities said any federal indictments in the case would not be unsealed until Benedict appears in court on Thursday. Downloading or distributing child pornography over the Internet is a federal crime.

Benedict's defense attorney, George Boisseau of Santa Rosa, could not be reached for comment.

Benedict, a bus driver for the Novato Unified School District and a former den leader for Cub Scout Pack 186 in Novato, was arrested last summer after police received a tip through a vigilante Web site called corporatesexoffenders.com.

Dan Gross: Joey Chestnut: My last Wing Bowl

WIN OR LOSE, Joey Chestnut says Friday's Wing Bowl will be his last. The two-time champion told us exclusively Monday of his plans to retire from Wing Bowl as a competitor, but the 24-year-old says he hopes to return next year to cheer on someone else.

"It's the biggest competitive eating party around," Chestnut says. "Maybe I'll be in someone's entourage," Chestnut tells us.

The San Jose State civil engineering major says his rigorous competitive eating schedule interferes with his studies. He also blames the sport and constantly being away from home for the recent breakup with his girlfriend of two years.

Chestnut isn't sure whether he will defend his Mustard Yellow Belt July 4 at Coney Island, N.Y., in Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog contest. Last year he defeated Japan's Takeru Kobayashi, bringing the title back to the United States.

She revealed: "I still battle with my deeply boring diet of, essentially, yogurt and breakfast cereal and granola bars. I hate dieting. I hate having to do it to be the "right" size. I'm hungry all the time."

"I think I'm a slender person, but the industry apparently doesn't. All actresses are hungry all the time, I think."

Julianne, 47, who has starred in a string of hit movies including Boogie Nights and The Hours admitted to once feeling so insecure she introduced a bizarre routine into her life. "I used to follow a daily routine called The Lucky Way, which involved drinking two cups of tea, leaving my apartment at exactly the same time.

Mukasey won't deem waterboarding illegal

In a letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, Mukasey said he has finished a review of Justice Department memos about the CIA's methods of interrogating terror suspects and finds them to be lawful. He said waterboarding is not used by the spy agency.

Because waterboarding is not part of what Mukasey described as a "limited set of methods" used by interrogators now, the attorney general said he would not rule on whether it is illegal.

"I understand that you and some other members of the (Judiciary) Committee may feel that I should go further in my review, and answer questions concerning the legality of waterboarding under current law," Mukasey wrote in his three-page letter to Leahy, D-Vt. "I understand the strong interest in this question, but I do not think it would be responsible for me, as attorney general, to provide an answer."

Mukasey's letter was sent on the eve of his appearance at a Justice Department oversight hearing chaired by Leahy.
