Upper Yoder businessman enters state House race

An Upper Yoder Township businessman and operator of the Johnstown Municipal Golf Course announced Monday that he is running for retiring state Rep. Tom Yewcic's seat in Harrisburg.David Gehlman, a Democrat, made his announcement in front of about 75 supporters in the gymnasium of Visitation Roman Catholic Church in the 8th Ward.Gehlman, president of Visitation's parish council, went right to the issues, telling the crowd that the minimum wage should never have been ignored like it was in the past.He said for 10 years, workers making minimum wage received only one increase and that was for 1 percent. He said it would have been better to give those workers moderate increases that they deserved during those 10 years instead of all at one time as they did a year ago. That caused businesses and the general public to absorb and fund the raise all at once. The workers also would have been more of an asset to the economy by making more money during those years, Gehlman said. The Upper Yoder Township resident said Pennsylvania needs to do more to become a business-friendly state.

NOFFKE NOT ONE FOR PEARS

Worcestershire have been unsuccessful in their attempt to sign Australian all-rounder Ashley Noffke as their overseas player for the 2008 campaign.

The Pears enquired about the availability of Noffke who is the second highest wicket-taker in the Pura Cup with 31 victims in six matches for Queensland and has also scored over 500 runs at an average of 54.

But their hopes of capturing the 30-year-old. who previously had a spell with Gloucestershire, have been dashed.

Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton said: "Noffke was of real interest to us. He is one of a number of players that we have made enquiries about but we believe we are no longer in the running for him."

The county, who announced losses of in excess of 1 million after the severe floods which engulfed New Road last summer, have linked up with former director of cricket Tom Moody in an attempt to solve their overseas player situation.

The Birth of a Newspaper

Ceremoniously, as a photographer waited to record the scene, Alicia stepped up to the press and pushed the button. The first issue of Newsday started rolling off the presses. Stan Peckham grabbed an armful and ran out the door with Nick Grande, the office boy, to drive off quickly on two missions. Peckham's most urgent assignment was the registration of the copyright for the new paper at the county courthouse in Mineola. The weekly newsmagazine Newsweek had been friendly to the new paper all summer long, Peckham said. In the weeks just before the first edition, they had been anxious to know its name, so they could prepare a story to run when the paper started up. But the management of Newsday was fearful that Newsweek might try to get some kind of injunction against the name, on the basis of copyright infringement.

Top Ten Albums Of 2002

In fact, when I saw them live last fall, the group's sense of onstage showmanship is nearly nonexistent. They played the entire show standing still, as if frozen by stage fright, and blanketed in darkness while a couple of large video screens flashed a series of animated shorts. The group's live setup is geared exclusively toward letting their eclectic music do all the talking.

Their diverse musical tastes and the difficulty in categorizing them could be another reason the group has only attracted a small cult following. Although they share Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips' fondness for psychedelic buzzing and oscillating sounds, "Rings Around The World" embraces a variety of musical styles -- from orchestral pop to Latin rhythms to country-style laments to guitar-drenched power pop -- and incorporates them into such elaborately layered and imposing songs.

GERMANY

SOFT DRINK SALES UP, BEER SALES DOWN

Germany and beer go together like Porsches and the autobahn, but health-conscious residents are eschewing the country's traditional beverage in favor of juices and bottled water, sending suds sales slipping.

According to a government report, the amount of beer sold in Germany fell by 2.7 percent in 2007 to 10.4 billion liters, a drop of 290 million liters from 2006.
