Clemens talks with high school coaches

In a session before about 1,000 Texas high school baseball coaches Saturday, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner stuck to baseball and cracked jokes, making no mention of the allegations in the Mitchell Report that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

"He talked like nothing ever happened. It was a non-issue in there," said Waco Midway High assistant coach Coby Meinzer.

Clemens spoke for more than an hour at the closing session of the annual convention of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, the nation's largest such group. He shared tips on techniques and took questions, all pertaining to the game itself.

"It was real warm, nothing negative at all," said Will Joiner, a coach from La Porte High.

The speech was closed to the media, and Clemens was driven in and out of the convention center through a private garage.

Their brother's keeper

He said If I'm here, no one's going to do anything bad to him," Kelly said.Aside from the time spent with his family, Sammy only shows emotion when he's splashing around in the tub, Kelly said. While they'd like to give him a bath every day, the only bathtub in the house is on the second floor. Sammy's case manager suggested putting in another bathroom downstairs, in Sammy's room."If we get one down there, it doesn't solve the problem. He's always going to be down there. I don't want that," Kassie said. While Sammy loves being in the bath, it's also a necessity for his hygiene, as he is in diapers, and likely always will be."He's like a full-time infant that doesn't grow up," Kassie said.Kassie said she'll continue fighting for her brother to live as normal a life as possible with the family he knows."Some people who hear about Sam think he's in a dark, cold, miserable, lonely world.

Embark.com Launches College Planner Application on Facebook(R ...

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Embark Corporation today announced the Embark.com College Planner built on Facebook Platform. Designed for students who are overwhelmed with the college admissions process, the application combines the power of Embark.com's college admissions technology and research tools with the reach of the Facebook social utility to help students communicate with other prospective students who have similar academic profiles and are considering applying to the same schools. The Embark.com College Planner is the first to give college-bound students access to this type of third-party, objective advice, and helps give users a better perspective on what is needed to get into a particular school.

"The Embark College Planner application takes the conversations that are happening right now in school cafeterias and home dinner tables and places them online in a way every student knows and is comfortable with," said Adam Park, president of Embark.

Everything But The GRRR! - Minus The Bear

Then, the hairiest band to make music since the Wurzels, went on to silence any criticism with track after track of core-shaking prog rock, swirling hypnotising synth’, heavy core riffs and intelligent lyrics. Erin thumped the skins as manically as Animal from the Muppets (but with talent!) and during ‘Lotus,’ Cory on Bass and Dave and Jake on guitars, all dropped to their knees, bent over their instruments as if commanded by their spell and praying fervently to the Gods within.

What do Minus The Bear sound like? "No-one else," says Cory with a grin. "We can’t be pigeon-holed," mocking what might be a more arrogant musician’s answer to thisquestion. "We sound like classic rock for the future" says newest member, Alex. The synth and keyboardist player joined in 2006, in time for the making of the most recent Minus The Bear album, ‘Planet Of Ice’.

Heavy Snowfall Slows Traffic; Delays, Closes Schools

MADISON, Wis. -- About a foot of snow fell in some parts of Wisconsin on Monday and early Tuesday, making travel difficult and forcing school officials to close or delay the start of classes.

About 9 to 13 inches of snow fell overnight in Washington County, where Germantown School District shut down. Slinger, Johnson Creek and Fond du Lac schools delayed the start of classes to allow buses and other vehicles make it through the snow.

The National Weather Service said that 7 to 12 inches fell in Ozaukee County and 7 to 11 inches in Sheboygan County.

About 7 to 8 inches fell to the west in La Crosse, Rock, Dane, Green and Lafayette counties.

In Madison, traffic was slow in some parts of the city's East Side as vehicles crept along the snow-covered roads.

Report looks at schools' success with Moodle

A new report from the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) aims to introduce educators to Moodle, an open-source software program for managing courses online.

"While the Consortium for School Networking is vendor-neutral and tries to help inform technology decision-making in K-12 environments by focusing on the choices available, there are times when examining a specific product can be very helpful," says the report, called "Moodle: An Open Learning Content Management System for Schools."

"Such, we believe, is the case with Moodle. While this report is technically not vendor-specific (since Moodle is 'open-source' software, it does not require going through a commercial vendor), we believe that the widespread and often enthusiastic response to Moodle by K-12 institutions creates a need to briefly define what Moodle is, to [suggest] what it can do, and to give some specific examples of how it is being implemented."

Moodle enables teachers to develop online curricula and lesson plans, administer assignments and quizzes, and participate in professional development activities from home.
