Heartfelt sendoff

Recently, villagers in Tameem came forward and helped Coalition and Iraqi security forces by providing information and denying the insurgents territory to operate. “It is difficult for lies about Americans to be believed when Americans constantly and consistently work to better the lives of the Iraqi people," Carmona said. “Iraqis see Coalition forces as honest, generous and impartial because this is what they have experienced when they have contact with us. I will look back on these MEDOPs with great pride after my tour ends." The 3-1st Cav. Regt. is assigned to the 3rd HBCT, 3rd Infantry Division, from Fort Benning, Ga., and has been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since March 2007. After reading this article; it becomes apparent why our military men and women take their missions seriously and with great pride.

Whiskey Flat melodrama ’ÄòWay Out West in a Dress’

Sierra Performing Arts and Cerro Coso Community College are presenting this year's melodrama for Whiskey Flat Days. The cast and crew are busy preparing for the show that will be held at Kernville Elementary School, 7:00 p.m. on Feb 14, 15, and 16. This zany production is being directed by Mary Hanawalt. Gary Geivet and this reporter are directing the musical portion.

'Way Out West in a Dress' or 'Life's a Hurdle When Your Wearing a Girdle' centers around two fellows from back East. Clarence thought he inherited a 'saloon' from his deceased aunt. After realizing that he really inherited a 'salon' he and Roger decide to dress up as women to run their new business. Of course trouble come along, as in all good melodramas. The heroin is abducted and the villainess behaves dastardly.

Wild Card -- Weekend

The firefighters used a reserve fire truck and their off-duty hours to collect food and toys for the local food bank and surprise residents, who came to their windows to wave at the passing truck. The firefighters will be out again Thursday and Friday evenings.

Woman killed when minivan hits school bus

There were no students on the West Clark Community school district bus. Police say the bus driver, 66-year-old Anna Marie Klein of Floyds Knobs, had minor injuries.

A coroner pronounced Anderson dead at the scene.

Police say the Pekin woman was driving west in her 2008 Dodge Caravan shorty before 4 p.m. today when she crossed the center line and hit the eastbound bus.

Anderson was alone in the van. Police don't know if she or Klein were wearing seat belts.

Fire districts' tax-hike requests differ

The district is looking to have five personnel members on duty at all times at each station, including new full-timers as they are hired. And at this time, there are no plans to cut the current contract or part-time staff, Vrba said.

"This referendum would add to the existing staffing, but with full-time personnel," Vrba said.

"That's going to give us the ability to handle two or more calls independently out of each station," Vrba said.

"It is a pretty dramatic increase, but we have been maintaining operations with our existing budget, and to take the next step we need to add personnel," he said.

This is the first time that the Northwest Homer fire district has gone to referendum since 1980, Vrba said.
